The Mega Millions multi-state lottery began in 2002, and the Michigan Lottery has been a partner the whole time. Originally, it cost $1 to play the game; that went up to $2 per play in 2017.

Beginning in April 2025, each Mega Millions play will cost players $5 - a whopping 150% increase compared to now.

Why Is the Price of Mega Millions Tickets Going Up?

Officials with Mega Millions say the price adjustment is expected to enhance the fun of the game.

Currently, Mega Millions players pick five white balls ranging from 1 to 70, along with a gold Mega ball between 1 and 25. Matching all six numbers correctly wins a share of the jackpot.

No word whether those dynamics will change in April, but the lottery does say that there will be "improved odds to win the jackpot".

As it stands, after someone wins a Mega Millions jackpot, the top prize for the next drawing starts over at $20 million and then grows from there. Beginning in April, officials say new starting jackpots will be higher, but they haven't revealed how high.

Other Upcoming Mega Millions Changes

Another change coming to Mega Millions in April will be built-in multipliers for every play that matches everything but the Mega ball - meaning such a match would win anywhere from $2 million to $10 million, depending on that drawing's randomly selected multiplier level. Currently, players may opt to add the potential for multiplying their jackpot to any given play for an additional dollar.

The prize structure for Mega Millions will also be changing to a degree. For one thing, there will not be any more "break-even" prizes. Currently, matching just the Mega ball in any given drawing gets a player their money back. Mega Millions officials say starting in April, all of the game's prizes will be bigger than the cost of a ticket.
