When lottery jackpots get particularly lofty, it seems to bring out the dreamer in a lot of us.

Even people who don't usually spend any of their hard-earned money on lottery tickets suddenly seem to want to try their luck - hoping they'll be the ones walking away with millions.

So far, there haven't been any big jackpot winners this year in Michigan. But with yet another national lottery game's jackpot surpassing a billion dollars, excitement is at a fever pitch. Of course, the odds are stacked against us all - but who doesn't daydream about what they'd do with all that money?

How Powerball Works

Powerball is a multi-state lottery played everywhere in the U.S. except Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada, or Utah.

Players select 5 numbers from 1 to 69, then a Powerball number ranging from 1 to 26. Alternatively, a player can choose to have the computer pick all of their numbers - called a "Quick Pick". If one ticket matches all six of those numbers, the holder wins the jackpot (multiple matches results in a split jackpot). The odds of this happening are 1 in 292,201,338, according to Powerball officials.

But that's not the only way to win. There are lesser prizes for partial matches - for example, matching the first five numbers but missing the Powerball wins $1,000,000. Admittedly, the odds of this happening aren't great either: 1 in 11,688,054. But it happens.
