Mackinac Island Residents Play A Game of Winter Pickup Hockey Downtown
Growing up in Michigan, street hockey is something so many kids take part in, being as we are home to one of the original 6. The tradition of street hockey goes all the way back to when roads started getting paved in wealthier parts of North America, around the turn of the 20th century and since then is still enjoyed by all hockey lovers. This also includes residents who live on Mackinac Island. So what do you do when tourist season is over, there's snow on the ground and it's the middle of the week? I guess a quick pick-up game will do.
Last Wednesday a bunch of residents were caught in a fun pick up game just outside the Starbucks Coffee on Main Street, throwing their bodies around trying to bury the neon yellow ball into the opposing net. I guess the past time of yelling "CAR" wouldn't be an issue here, you're much more likely to get a pause in the action when someone yells out, "HORSE!"
Roller hockey continues to be a very popular sport especially with adults, as regular tournaments and leagues are held across the country. But this kind of takes the game back to it's purest form. It's all about going out and having fun with your friends and seeing if you can pull off a little bit of magic for bragging rights.
From the looks of the video there appears to be a lot of Red Wings fans, which doesn't surprise me. Personally, I'd love to see some of these guys take on some Red Wings vets. Now THAT would be a game.
