With temperatures across most of Michigan expected to approach the 90's, the National Weather Service is warning those around the Great Lakes this Memorial Day Weekend that water temperatures are still very cold. Taking the plunge at the beach this weekend could actually be life threatening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids, water temperatures in Lake Michigan are still going to be in the upper 40's and lower 50's. Temperatures that cold can cause your body to go into shock very quickly. When this happens, your body could experience loss of muscle control.

Now, this doesn't mean you can't test the waters for yourself. Just take extra precautions. Limit the time you spend in cold water. NWS also suggests wearing a life jacket, regardless of water depth, in case you do lose control of your muscles. And, refrain from going into the water alone.
