MHSAA Making Rules Changes For 2020-21 Season

The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced on Friday morning that they are making changes for the upcoming 2020-21 sports season.

The MHSAA announced changes to the seeding format for ice hockey that mandates that the number 1 and 2 seeds be in the opposite bracket in a given regional tournament.  So the top two seeds wouldn't play until the regional final.

It will also allow players to play up to five quarters of competition during the week.  This rule would allow some varsity players to play at the sub-varsity level to help keep JV teams solvent.  In recent years, schools have had trouble fielding sub-varsity teams in football, for example.

The 50 point rule in football is now extended to include the first half now.  That rule involving a running clock was only in existence for the second half of games.

The MHSAA canceled the remainder of the 2019-20 sports season last month.
