Michigan Joins 20 Other States In Lawsuit Over OT Laws

WLNS.com reports that Michigan is part of a group of 21 states that have sued the U.S. Department of Labor over upcoming changes to overtime exemption laws for American workers. The lawsuit is aimed at stopping planned changes to "white collar exemtion" labor laws.

Currently, a salaried worker making more than $23,660 annually is exempt from overtime wage benefits for working more than 40 hours per week. On December 1, 2016, that exemption number is more than doubling to $47,476. Full-time, salaried workers making less than that amount would, by law, be entitled to time and a half pay for hours worked over 40 per week.

The 21 plaintiff states contest that the increase will be a burden on public and private sector job places and that the law change is an overstep by the Federal Government.
