A longstanding tradition in the Lansing Area is set to take place this week. The annual Police & Fire Field Day and Safety Patrol Picnic has a decades long history, with reports that date all the way back to the days of Lake Lansing Amusement Park. In fact, I was a part of the Safety Patrol Picnic when I was in fifth grade.

Nowadays, I have the pleasure of playing the party tunes again this year.

Each year, local law enforcement agencies, first responders, and other public safety organizations gather to celebrate the end of the year with elementary school students that volunteer their time to keep their schoolmates safe on local streets and sidewalks before and after school. The program is spearheaded by Lansing Area Safety Council. The event is known to have local celebrities drop by, including Big Lug of the Lansing Lugnuts and his pal from Michigan State University, Sparty.

And, as standard tradition, the Safety Patrol of the Year will be announced. The picnic will be Tuesday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Hawk Island County Park in Lansing.
