Pot Users Welcome, Amazon Will No Longer Test Job Seekers for Cannabis
Here in Michigan Medical Cannabis was legalized in 2008, and Adult Recreational Cannabis was legalized in 2019. It’s legal here for adult use in the state of Michigan and 16 other states, and medical cannabis is legal in 36 states. However it’s not legal with the federal government, therefore most companies that still do pre-employment drug testing also test for cannabis, and a positive test will disqualify you for the job you are applying for. Citizens have complained about cannabis being legal like alcohol, but people are still being discriminated against when it comes to employment if you test positive for cannabis.
In March, a New York man sued Amazon, saying the company rescinded his job offer at an Amazon warehouse because he tested positive for marijuana, even though the city banned employers from testing job applicants for cannabis in 2020. Amazon said in a blog post that it will still test workers for other drugs and conduct “impairment checks” on the job. And the company said some roles may still require a cannabis test in line with Department of Transportation regulations.
Amazon is the second largest private employer in America behind Walmart. They are making these changes in policy in response to some states legalizing the product or creating laws that prohibit testing for it.
Looks like all positions will be open for this opportunity, but Delivery drivers may not qualify as the Department of Transportation has some pretty strict requirements. Amazon states that it supports the federal legalization of cannabis and the Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement Act of 2021.
