Time Is Running Out To Update Your Regular Michigan Driver’s License
Update: The Department of Homeland Security has once again pushed back the REAL ID deadline. You will now need to update your license or ID by May 7th, 2025. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas says this will allow stated more time to become compliant:
This extension will give states needed time to ensure their residents can obtain a REAL ID-compliant license or identification card. DHS will also use this time to implement innovations to make the process more efficient and accessible.
Previously: After extending the deadline due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the DHS is reminding Michigan license holders that their regular licenses must be updated for access to federal facilities.

You can upgrade your normal Michigan State ID or Driver's License at any Secretary of State location in Michigan. You will need to have your current ID, a passport, birth certificate, or other ID as identified by the State of Michigan and the DHS.

Are there any additional costs for a 'REAL ID' in the State of Michigan?
If you are upgrading to a 'REAL ID' at the time of renewal or replacement of a Michigan ID, there is no additional fee. If you want to update your ID prior to renewal the state charges a $9 fee for a Driver's License "correction" or $10 for a State ID "correction".
