There have been over 800 cases of the liver damaging Hepatitis A in Michigan since August of 2016; twenty five of those cases were fatal; that's an increase of just over 80 percent!

According to the Michigan Department of Health,  as of this past Friday afternoon, there are 26 reported cases here in Ingham County. Macomb County has 218 and the city of Detroit has 168.

During that same time period, Kentucky had over 300 cases of the highly contagious viral infection, most of them near Louisville.

The state of Indiana typically gets less than twenty cases of hepatitis a year, but they’ve had 77 cases just since January of this year. Therefore, Indiana health officials are advising residents of Indiana to get vaccinated for Hep A if  their summer plans include visits to Kentucky or Michigan.

The Michigan Department of Health has a list here of symptoms of Hepatitis A, as well as ways you can protect yourself.
