Looking to Catch Walleye? Southeast Mi Is On Fire Next Two Months
If you're looking to bring some walleye home, fishing is on fire for the next two months on the Southeast side of Michigan.
Spring Walleye In Southeast Michigan
Walleye may not be a good-looking fish but it is one of the best-tasting fish in the state of Michigan. For those who don't know, walleye season stays open year-round in the Detroit River, Lake St. Clair, St. Clair River, and Lake Erie.
Now I never fished the Detroit River but my buddy and his dad used to slam the walleye there. I used to go to Port Huron and fish the St. Clair River from the shore in April and early May and slay the walleye but it's been 25 years since I've been there.
There are lots of boats on the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers day and night racking up the walleye. On both of these waters, you can keep 6 per day which means there is a lot of fish. I was using 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce jigs with pearl tails and consistently caught my limit and I was on the shore, I couldn't imagine what you can do in a boat. If you want big walleye, now through May you can get them in all the waters listed above.
Michigan DNR Says Walleye Population in Lake Erie is 94 Million
The DNR says the walleye fishing this year is some of the best it has ever been with Lake Erie up 23 million walleye from last year. Right now for the next couple of months, those Lake Erie and Saginaw Bay walleye are in St. Clair and Detroit Rivers so you have a lot of fish in concentrated areas.
WXYZ reported that walleye charter owner George Cini said the water in the Detroit River is cleaner than it has been in decades and now people are traveling from all over the country to walleye fish. See the video here to learn more.
