The USS Silversides is a WWII era gato-submarine docked at the USS Silversides Submarine Museum in Muskegon, Michigan. In addition to daily tours the submarine is available to rent for group overnight encampments.
Joseph Robert Beyrle (1923-2004) was a paratrooper with the 101st Airborne when he was caught by the Germans during the Normandy landings. Eventually, he managed to escape and wandered in the German countryside until he met Russian troops and persuaded their commanders to allow him to fight on the front line.
This was a fun rabbit-hole to go down as we watched people in Detroit go nuts over Matthew Stafford leading the Los Angeles Rams to a Super Bowl victory, and getting a ring after over a decade of being stuck with the Lions.
I don't know all that much about Muskegon. I've been there three times. I drove a friend there for a job interview in an industrial area. I went with another friend to a wedding at a bowling ally, and in between took my boys to see Alice Cooper at the Summer Celebration in 2006.
