The Significance Of A 'Golden' Birthday

We've talked about these before and tried to articulate it but seems how it is mine today, let's break down just what the hell even is a "Golden Birthday."

Now, I have been explaining it as, basically, "the birthday where you turn the same age as the date." For example, I'm 24 on August 24th!

Another way to phrase it is the "champagne birthday" which is fitting in my case but you do feel bad for people whose birthday falls in the single-digit days of the month...can't be popping bubbly for a four-year-old.

The only source I could find that really explains where this terminology came from was Bags of Love who said, "The concept of Golden Birthdays is credited to Joan Bramsch. She claims she first got the idea in 1955, and it was something special for her children."

For those whose "golden birthday" happens to fall after more of the "milestone" birthdays like your 13th, 16th and 21st, it does feel good to have sort of an "extra" reason to celebrate and to try to make the day a bit more meaningful.

Sure, in the grand scheme of things while one person is celebrating their birthday, it's "just another Monday" to others but a golden birthday sure does add at least a little *sparkle*.

In a year like 2020, that has felt a bit hopeless, bleak or just "waiting for the other shoe to drop" it is fun to have a day that shines a ray of GOLDEN light where it otherwise wouldn't be.

This weekend, I really did not want to make a big to-do about my birthday but my friends and family really tried to make it special.

Some of my best friends from college made their way from Grand Rapids and Denver, Colorado to make it a special weekend to "pregame" my birthday. Here are just a few pictures of the festivities!

Today (my actual birthday) the festivities include kicking it all off right here at WMMQ, grabbing lunch with a friend and later having hot dogs with my dad, best friend and Jordan.
