When the Detroit Lions take the field on Opening Day against the Chicago Bears, there will be no fans there to cheer or boo them, as needed. The Lions announced today that no fans will be allowed to attend the first two home games at Ford Field as the team attempts to begin their upcoming 2020 NFL schedule.

"As the uncertainty around the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact communities throughout the United States and the State of Michigan, the Detroit Lions announced today that Ford Field will not have fans at their first two home games against the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints this season." - Detroit Lions

The Lions' third home game is set for November 1st against Indianapolis. The team says it's too early to make any formal announcement about that game, but that it will be evaluating and consulting with medical professionals and the Governor's office.

This move is in line with many other NFL teams announcing similar plans, though it's not the same across the board in the NFL.

As of Friday morning, fourteen teams have now announced there will be no fans at their early season games, with at least three more California teams likely to follow.

But the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs announced 16,000 fans (about 22% capacity) will be allowed to attend the Thursday night season opener vs. Houston on September 10th.
