If you think COVID-19 is gone in Michigan and things are back to normal, think again because last week alone nearly 13,000 new cases were reported.

Is the pandemic over? That was the question my son asked me recently me. At first, I wanted to say yes, but I had to think about that answer plus do a little research before giving him one.

I asked my son if the school had him and his classmates wearing masks again and he replied no. To be honest, I was surprised because his school had done such a good job with the kids previously. I don't know the school's plans for the colder months but it looks like I now have a couple of questions for them.

After doing some research on Michigan regarding COVID-19, I had to go back to my son and explain that the coronavirus is still active here in West Michigan, around the state, around the country, and around the world.

I then explained to my son that now that the colder months of the year are near when people catch colds, it will be a good time to start wearing our masks again when going to public places and don't be surprised if the school has you do the same thing if COVID begins shutting down classrooms again.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has not required schools to make masks mandatory for students but did give a thumbs up to the recommendation that came from the state health department for masking in school buildings.

All I know is that I wore a mask from October to April this past year, plus received my vaccinations and I didn't get the flu or COVID-19. I and my son will be doing that again this year.
