The state of Michigan is absolutely loaded with haunted locations…and I don’t mean the annual “haunted houses” that are put on every Halloween. I’m talkin’ ‘bout the ones that are believed to actually contain some sort of paranormal activity.

The ten locations listed below are just a tip of the iceberg. This is not a Top Ten list, just a list of ten locations, centered around the Traverse City area, that are worth seeking out for more info and history.

TRAVERSE CITY ASYLUM
The spirits of passed-on inmates are said to roam the halls and rooms, with witnesses sighting shapes in long white hospital gowns and hearing the usual noises: moans, sounds of despair, etc. Find out more HERE.

THE STRYCHNINE MURDERS AT FIFE LAKE
Nowadays, the scene of the crime, known as the Battenfield House, is reportedly full of paranormal activity. People have witnessed flames of fire in the upstairs area which have no heat to them, along with the usual bumps, creaks, whispers, voices, and footsteps. More details HERE.

PORTAL TO HELL / HIPPIE TREE
The location of the tree is said to be where the spirits of those who died in the hospital congregate. One story says that in the 1950s, two boys were playing by the tree when an asylum inmate escaped and found them there. He murdered one of them and buried the body in a nearby spring. Info HERE.

MONROE CENTER CEMETERY The legend says that any tribe member who has learned the ways of “bad medicine” can change his/herself into the form of any animal they wish. When this person does not assume the shape of an animal or stay in human form, they become a ball of light. This ball of light has been seen within this old cemetery floating from tree-to-tree and even on the ground. Read the legend HERE.

THE TORCH LAKE MONSTER This creature is said to live at the very bottom of the deepest part of the lake and rises to the surface at night, searching for late-night boaters or fishermen, swimmers, and campers to chase away from his lair or possibly devour. Discover more of this myth HERE.

MISSION TABLE INN Genevieve, wife of the inn owner, hung herself from the elevator shaft's rafters...As for any ghostly occurrences, it's said that at times the elevator goes up & down on its own, her face has been spotted in mirrors, things re-arrange and fly off shelves in the storeroom and lights that go on & off by themselves. Read her sad story HERE.

GLEN ARBOR CEMETERY The majority of these tombstones are well over one hundred years old, 1800's and some early 1900's...it's a favorite place for paranormal investigators who believe the cemetery is haunted. Take a look HERE.

THE OASIS RED BULL TAVERN Whatever the reason, not long after the man was found hung, the weird stuff started to happen. Footsteps were heard throughout the building at night after closing. Items were being moved by unseen hands...bar items, storeroom inventory, chairs, etc. Click HERE for more.

OLD TOWN PLAYHOUSE The faces of Aaron and Eric have been seen peering out of windows when the building is empty, lights have been seen going on & off late at night when the place is closed, footsteps are heard where there is no physical evidence, and strange piano music is heard when there's no one playing. Find out why HERE.

SOUTH MANITOU ISLAND According to the tale, there was a ship loaded with cholera-infected passengers that docked at the island. Sailors dug a huge mass grave and proceeded to bury the dead…and threw in some still-alive sufferers as well. The sordid tale is found HERE.
