According to a U.S. Department of Food Safety and and Inspection Service (FSIS) announcement, they were notified of two people sick with listeriosis on June 9, 2021. FSIS worked with the CDC and state public health partners and determined there is evidence linking the illnesses to precooked chicken produced at Tyson Foods:

The epidemiologic investigation identified three listeriosis illnesses, including one death, between April 6, 2021 and June 5, 2021.

Recalled items include include frozen, fully cooked chicken strips, diced chicken, chicken wing sections, and fully cooked pizza with chicken produced between December 26, 2020 and April 13, 2021. They have establishment number “EST. P-7089” on the product bag or inside the USDA mark of inspection.

According to the CDC, products were shipped nationwide to retailers, restaurants,, schools, and Department of Defense locations. The recalled chicken was sold under many brands including Tyson, Jet’s Pizza, Casey’s General Store, Marco’s Pizza, and Little Caesars. You can find the full list of recalled products here and see all the labels here.

Listeria can cause severe illness when the bacteria spread beyond the gut to other parts of the body. Symptoms of listeriosis  include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions --  sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. Pregnant people, adults over 65, and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk for severe illness.

If you have any of the recalled chicken, throw it away or return it where you bought it. The CDC suggests you clean your refrigerator, freezer, containers, and surfaces that may have touched the recalled products.
