WLNS.com reports that the Michigan Department of Transportation has officially unveiled the new flex-lane traffic pattern on the heavily traveled stretch of U.S. 23 between Brighton and Ann Arbor.

The pattern allows for drivers to utilize the inside shoulder as a lane of traffic flow during peak traveling hours. Overhead lane lights show drivers which lanes are open for through traffic, and when the flex lanes are available.

The flex-lane concept saved the state millions of dollars over adding a third traditional lane.
