Finally! 2018 has produced enough cold weather to produce some decent ice on area lakes for fishing. That said, we're hoping that everyone takes extra precautions when heading onto the ice. Never take for granted that the ice is thick enough to hold the weight of you and your gear. Always test the ice with a spud or similar device every few feet as you make your way out.

And as the Michigan DNR does every year, they have announced the upcoming winter free fishing weekend. The opportunity for anglers to go out and fish without a fishing license. Keep in mind that all creel and size limits will apply.

This year, the winter free fishing weekend will be February 17 - 18. This gives new anglers to try what many of us have known for years. That ice fishing is a great opportunity to get to hard to reach spots when a watercraft isn't available!

Please make sure to follow all of the rules with size and catch limits. Also, never fish alone! Having another person with you can increase the odds of rescue, should an unfortunate accident occur. Best to all during this new year and tight lines!
