Michigan has a lot of square miles to travel. We have the Upper Peninsula and Lower Peninsula. Odds are you've driven on Michigan's longest road. When we say "hit the open road" we are talking about roadtrips, that means highways too.

Here are some fun facts about Michigan roads:

  • Michigan has a total of 120,256 miles of paved roadway (9,669 route miles of state trunkline, 89,444 route miles of county roads, and 21,198 route miles of city and village streets).

  • There is enough pavement in Michigan roadways to build a one-lane road from the Earth to the moon.

  • More than 95.1 billion miles are driven on Michigan roadways every year.

It's mind blowing to me that we have enough pavement in Michigan roadways to build a one lane road to the moon. I wonder how long, if it were ever possible, it would take to build a bridge to the moon. That's another topic for another day. For now I'll stay put and travel the roadways in Michigan, on Earth.

Whenever I drive on the longest road in Michigan it's not usually until I am heading to Mackinaw City, the U.P. or Mackinac Island. The longest road in Michigan can take you from the border of Michigan & Ohio to the U.P. and an international border crossing. I take US127 north to intersect the longest road in the mitten.

I am talking about I-75. There's a lot of ground that I-75 covers:

The longest highway in Michigan is I-75, which runs 395 miles from the Ohio border to the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie.

Odds are you've driven on I-75 in Michigan. Maybe you were heading up north, Detroit or Ohio. Why Ohio? I-75 is the highway on the right in the pic below, the one that takes you all the way from the D to Sault Ste. Marie. You can also get to Florida on I-75.

If you head to the U.P., the true "up north" in Michigan, you'll cross the Mackinac Bridge. I love driving across the mighty Mac. Here's a fun fact about the bridge:

The towers on the Mackinac Bridge (552 feet high) are almost as tall as the Washington Monument (555 feet high).

I am not aware of any stretches of road in Michigan, let alone the U.S., that has a massive suspension bridge like the Mack. Getting across the bridge is easy.

Hit the open road and visit Michigan along I-75 and see what you'll find.
