I'm proud to be born and raised in Michigan, but I had no idea that 'Michigan Day' was a thing until today.

I'm not saying that Michigan shouldn't have our own day, in fact I think it's a great idea! There are a million reasons why Michigan is the best state in the country, and they get recognized in every bit of Michigan's tourism campaign.

I want to give you the real life reasons that Michigan is the best state in the country. The Pure Michigan reasons are all very valid. Things like the Pictured Rocks, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Mackinaw Island, and so many others are all great things. They give any tourist ample reasons to explore our great state.

My 'real life' reasons for loving Michigan are not as sexy as those tourist destinations, but they are things you can always fall back on when you live here.

1. NO NATURAL DISASTERS

Sure we may have our fair share of snow or thunderstorms (sometimes at the same time) but that's about as bad as it gets.

Michiganders don't really have to worry about a major earthquake, volcano, hurricane, or any other way Mother Nature wants to stick it to us.

2. NOT MANY ANIMALS THAT WANT TO KILL US

There are dangerous animals in Michigan, but not many that would go out of their way to kill you. Think about all of the crazy, and sometimes poisonous things you will run into around the country!

  • Poisonous snakes and spiders
  • Scorpions
  • Alligators
  • Killer Bees
  • Sharks
  • Chupacabra

You won't find any of those things in Michigan.

3. PLENTY OF WATER

The most important natural resource in the world is fresh water, and guess who has more if it than anyone . . .

MICHIGAN! Think about how much it's going to suck for people who don't have access to clean drinking water in the future. Water will become more valuable than any precious metal, and we will be sitting in the the only state surrounded by fresh water.

I'm not saying that we will end up living in some sort of Mad Max post apocalyptic scenario, but if we do, I like my odds in Michigan.

4. SEASONS

Living in a state where it's warm all the time sounds good in theory until you realize that the mosquito's never die off there.

There are plenty of things I love about all four of our seasons in Michigan, even when they all happen in the same day.

5. BEER & WINE

Surrounded by so much fresh water, it only makes sense that Michigan has become the craft brewery king of our country.

The fact that you can book a brewery or winery tour in any corner of our state is one of the most overlooked greats about Michigan. Michigan wineries are getting recognized as some of the best in the world, and our beer game is way in front of any other state.

If you're just now learning that January 18th is Michigan Day, I hope these five reasons are just the starting point for you to celebrate our great state.
