When I was a kid, the only people I saw with tattoos were bikers and people in the military. Today, they are widely accepted and you see many Moms wearing them too. It seems like they have become quite popular in recent years.

In reality, it’s a trend that has been around for 5000 years. I’ve been around lots of friends who go to all the biker rallies, and some of them say it’s a tradition to get a tat at every rally. Many are curious why people get tattoos.

Byrdie.com says

"The 1970s was really a time period when we started seeing celebrities that were visibly tattooed," Dr. David Lane, an assistant professor at Illinois State University who has done extensive research on tattooing says. Citing major stars such as Cher, Peter Fonda, and Janis Joplin as among the first to display their ink. "In a sense I think we were seeing more of it or more different kinds of bodies; NFL players started getting tattooed on their arms, basketball players, baseball players. As a public, we can see more and more kinds of people with them." We know now that not everyone who has them is a criminal or someone with a shady moral compass, which unfortunately, used to be a common stereotype.

Many tattoos today are truly a work of art. Some wear them to be unique, some are reminders of milestones or loss of a loved one. There are social statements and just beautiful art. No matter why someone wears a tattoo, it’s their choice and their message. My Stepdaughter has a tattoo of her horse that she had when she was a teenager tattooed on her ankle. A niece has a little saying tattooed on her upper arm in her Grandmother’s handwriting as a memory she will cherish.

I’ve searched for the shops here in the Lansing area, and I must say I was kind of sad to see how many had closed during the pandemic. I went through every listing in the area and many were just empty storefronts.
