Fall Sports State Tournaments Suspended For Now
At least for now, the fall sports state tournaments are suspended until further notice.
According to the Lansing State Journal, the Michigan High School Athletic Association said its goal is to complete its fall tournaments before January 1.
The MHSAA plans to release revised schedules on Wednesday afternoon for the fall sports tournament and winter sports, but said the biggest assumption is everyone doing their part for COVID-19 case numbers to improve so a restart can take place on Dec. 9 when the current three week pause is scheduled to expire. Executive director Mark Uyl said for all of our three sports, we will have a plan that completes those tournaments in the calendar year 2020.
Uyl also said we're going to wait until Dec. 8 and hopefully our numbers get to a point where we can resume practice and competition.
There are three weeks remaining in the 11 player football tournament and two weeks in the 8 player football tournament. Swimming and diving and volleyball were down to the final week of their seasons.
Mark Uyl said we really have a challenge here over the next three weeks to do the right things to get our numbers back to where they were in August, September and early October. If we want to give our kids a chance, this is what we've got to do. Hopefully after three weeks we'll be able to get kids back to activity, because mentally I think all of us need this right now. I think Mark makes a good point. COVID-19 numbers are rising at a dangerous rate right now in not only the state of Michigan, but just about every state in the United States. Stay home, stay safe, and hopefully the suspended fall sports tournaments will be played before Jan. 1.
