Michigan residents carry all kinds of things in their wallets. We carry everything from cash and credit cards to insurance cards and lottery tickets in our wallet. Some foolish Michiganders carry this specific item in their wallets and it's time to stop carrying it.

The basic things are all you need to carry in your wallet. You might need some cash to tip someone, or you might need it for bail money. Your debit or credit card will be necessary at the gas pump. Insurance cards are important in case you get hurt and need medical attention. If that lottery ticket is a winner, turn it in and claim your prize. Other cards that identify you could be in your wallet too like a membership card to Costco, Sam's Club or if you're old, AARP.

The Feds Say "Take this out of your wallet NOW", Stop Carrying It

One of my biggest fears is identity theft. One of the easiest ways for someone to steal your identity is to steal your Social Security Card and know your Social Security Number. Anyone who steals your identity can destroy your life! Lines of credit can be opened under your name and major purchases could leave you in a tailspin. Hold onto your Social Security Card, the lines to get a new one are lengthy.

Social Security Matters says:

We encourage you not to carry your Social Security card with you every day. The best way to “Guard Your Card” is to keep it in a safe place and share it only when required, which is rare. In fact, in most cases, just knowing the Social Security number should be enough. In 49 states and the District of Columbia, a Social Security card isn’t required to request a Real ID.

Leave your Social Security Card at home in a locked safe. That's the best thing you can do to protect your identity.
