We have five Mid-Michigan area teams still alive for state titles in football as we reach the regional final stage of the state tournament this weekend.

We lost a few teams last week in the district finals such as East Lansing, Haslett, Olivet, and (in the regional finals) Morrice in 8-Player football.

Here's a brief look at each of the games involving the five area teams this weekend.

DIVISION 3 - DEWITT (10-1) VS. CEDAR SPRINGS (9-2) - Saturday - 1PM @ Grand Ledge HS

The Panthers scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to put away undefeated Mt. Pleasant last week 50-26.  The offense, led by senior QB Tyler Holtz has been prolific once again.  Cedar Springs is a surprise opponent as they upset perennial power Muskegon last week.  DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman was the coach at Cedar Springs before coming to DeWitt two decades ago.

DIVISION 3 - MASON (9-2) @ BLOOMFIELD HILLS BROTHER RICE (8-3) - Friday - 7PM @ Lawrence Tech University

The Bulldogs won an exciting district final over Haslett last week.  Ethan Ettinger and A.J. Martel were stellar in the 27-21 triumph.  It gets tougher as they head to the Detroit area to play the perennial power in the Detroit Catholic League.  The Bulldogs will need a similar effort from their top players to beat Brother Rice.

DIVISION 5 - PORTLAND (9-2) VS. KALAMAZOO UNITED (8-3) - Friday - 7PM

The Raiders held on to defeat GLAC champion Olivet 35-28 last Friday.at home.  Senior QB Hayden Getchall is a tough dual threat QB for coach John Novara.  And they have lots of guys who can carry the ball.  If the weather is bad, it could be a low-scoring affair.  That could help the Raiders advance to the semis next week.

DIVISION 6 - LANSING CATHOLIC (10-1) VS. MONTAGUE (8-3) - Saturday - 1PM

The Cougars won easily last week over previously unbeaten Millington 28-8.  They are favored to advance to the semis once again.  Joey Baker, Alex Watters, and Brandon Lewis have been mainstays all season long for the CAAC White champs.  Montague lost to Portland in Week 9, but are good every single year.

DIVISION 7 - PEWAMO-WESTPHALIA (11-0) VS. ELKTON-PIGEON-BAY PORT LAKER (8-3) - Saturday - 1PM

P-W is a decided favorite over Pigeon Laker (as they are called in the Flint area).  The Pirates have had key injuries all season long, but they thrashed New Lothrop last week in the district finals.  It would be a major upset if P-W lost at home.  Head coach Jeremy Miller might be the area coach of the year.

Join Brock Palmbos and Erik "Doc" Love Friday night starting at 6:00 pm for the pregame show.  And then tune in to Portland against Kalamazoo United right before 7:00 for the game broadcast.  And it's brought to you by Cherry Creek Mortgage Company and by Lansing Surgical Associates.
