HISTORIC MICHIGAN SMALL TOWN: Irons, in Lake County
The village of Irons is located in Eden Township, Lake County.
It's an unincorporated community that began as a Chicago & W. Michigan Railway station (later named the Pere Marquette Railroad) in 1894. Named after one of the first families who settled there, Irons was platted in 1909 and a post office followed in 1910.
Irons did a moderately good lumber business for awhile. When the railroad was discontinued and torn up, the logging business shriveled as well. But Irons persevered, and today has a decent community, even though it's still unincorporated.
A drive-thru will take you to a few places where you can stop and grab some road snacks: Irons cafe', EZ Mart, Oak Grove Tavern, and Jackie's Place. Visiting any smalltown Michigan eatery is always fun...and tasty! The Martin Johnson Heritage Museum is a good place to visit to learn more about the town's historical significance.
