Almost 3,000 people died in the attacks against our country on September 11th, 2001.

Today is a tough day for the entire country. For those of us who lived through it, we all have a story about where we were at the time of attacks; for some, the stories are even closer to home.

Each one of those victims is special; you may not have known it, but quite a few were Michigan natives or had ties to the mitten state.

Terence (Ted) E. Adderley was 22-years-old and worked at Fred Alger Management at the World Trade Center. He was originally from Bloomfield Hills. 

David D. Alger was 57-years-old and also worked at Fred Alger Management in the World Trade Center. He was Ted's boss; he was originally from Grosse Pointe and received his Masters Degree in business from the University of Michigan. He is survived by his wife and two children.

Todd Beamer was 32-years-old and a Flint native. He was a passenger on United Flight 93 and was part of the contingency of passengers who tried to take down the hijackers. He was heard saying the iconic phrase, "Let's roll!" over the airphone.

Eric Lee Bennett was 29-years-old and also a native of Flint. He attended Kearsley High School and Ferris State University; he was the vice president of the Alliance Consulting Group on the 102nd floor of the north tower in the World Trade Center.

Dr. Yeneneh Betru was 35-years-old and graduated from medical school at the University of Michigan. He was on Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon.

Kirsten Lail Christophe was 39-years-old and a Michigan State University graduate. She worked in the south tower of the World Trade Center at Aon Corporation. She's survived by her daughter and her husband.

Brian Paul Dale was 43-years-old and graduated from law school at the University of Michigan. He was a consultant for Price Waterhouse and was a passenger on American Airlines flight 11, which was hijacked and crashed into the World Trade Center.

Frank J. Doyle was 39-years-old and worked at the south tower of the World Trade Center. He was able to call his wife twice after the attacks and told her that he needed to stay back and help people. 

Barbara Edwards was 58-years-old and native of Wyoming, Michigan. She was a passenger on Flight 77 when it crashed into the Pentagon.

Pal Friedman was 45-years-old and a graduate of the University of Michigan. He and his wife had just adopted a little boy when he boarded American Airlines Flight 11.

James Gartenberg was 38-years-old and was the president of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of New York for 12 years. He had a 2-year-old daughter and his wife was pregnant; he worked for Julien J. Studley Inc., which was moving from the World Trade Center to an office in midtown at the time.

Steven Goldstein was 35-years-old and was a computer analyst for Cantor Fitzgerald at the World Trade Center. He was a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Bradley (Brad) Van Hoorn was 22-years-old and was a native of Richland, Michigan, and grew up in Gull Lake. He was a research associate at Fred Alger Management; he was working on the 93rd floor of Tower 1.

Suzanne Kondratenko was 27-years-old and a native of Romeo, Michigan. She was at a meeting with Aon Insurance executives on the 92nd floor of the north tower.

Darya Lin was 32-years-old and a native of Ann Arbor. She was a graduate of the University of Michigan and was attending a meeting on the 92nd floor of the World Trade Center’s tower 2. She reportedly stayed behind on the 78th floor to help others.

Peter Edward Mardikian was 29-years-old and a Kalamazoo native. He had been married to his wife for only six weeks when he was attending a conference at the Windows on the World restaurant in the north tower.

Margaret Elaine Mattic was 51-years-old and a native of Detroit. She worked as a customer service account representative for General Telecom in the north tower of the World Trade Center. She was also a graduate of Wayne State University.

Albert Ogletree was 49-years-old and a Michigan native. He was working in the cafeteria at Cantor Fitzgerald in the north tower.

David Pruim was 52-years-old and a native of Muskegon. He worked for the Aon Corporation on the 103rd floor of 2 World Trade Center. His father was the mayor of Muskegon from 1994-1996. He's survived by his wife and daughter.

Marsha D. Ratchford was 34-years-old and worked for the Navy at the Pentagon at the time of the attacks. She was born in Detroit.

Joshua A. Rosenthal was 44-years-old and a Livonia native. He graduated from the University of Michigan and was the Senior Vice President with Fiduciary Trust International in the World Trade Center.

Brock J. Safronoff was 26-years-old and raised in Traverse City and a Detroit Lions fan. He worked as a computer programmer at Marsh & McLennan in the World Trade Center.

Lt. Col. Kip Taylor was 38-years-old and an assistant to a three-star general at the Pentagon. He was a Marquette native and a graduate of Northern Michigan University.

Brian John Terrenzi was 28-years-old and a Michigan native. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald as a global network manager int the World Trade Center. His wife was pregnant at the time.

Lisa Marie Terry was 42-years-old and a Michigan native. She was the vice president at Marsh & McLennan in their Rochester and was at the World Trade Center for work.

Eric (Rick) Raymond Thorpe was 35-years-old and a native of Grand Rapids. He was one of the top salespeople at Keefe, Bruyette & Woods.

Meredith Lynn Whalen was 23-years-old and a native of Canton. She was a research associate with Fred Alger Management and a graduate of the University of Michigan.
