LOOK: Michigan Schools Unveil Creative Artwork in MDOT’s Paint the Plow Project
As winter weather returns, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has once again partnered with schools across the state for the "Paint the Plow" program.
Launched in 2023, Paint the Plow is an opportunity for MDOT and local road agencies to work with Michigan students to promote safe driving behavior and create awareness for the plow operators who work to keep Michigan’s roads free from snow and ice.

In 2023, Ovid-Elsie High School's National Art Honor Society students were invited to paint a creative and original piece of art reflecting their individual school, while promoting the theme "Don't rush in ice and slush."
This year, the program was expanded to include the following schools:
- Bay Region's Heritage High School
- Grand Region's Caledonia High School
- Superior Region's Newberry High School
- University Region's Western High School

The theme for 2024-2025 is "Go hands-free. Just drive. It's the law.", reminding drivers that it is illegal to hold and use an electronic device while driving in Michigan.
You'll be able to see the painted plows along various state trunkline highways in Michigan through the winter. They serve as both functional maintenance vehicles and striking reminders of the importance of safe driving practices.

MDOT snowplow names and locations will be accessible on Mi Drive in late fall.
For schools that would like to participate in Paint the Plow next year, applications and the them will be available beginning in March 2025. All Michigan high schools are welcome to apply. Schools must supply a draft of the intended design and a commitment to complete the plow blade before the winter season.
