Recently I've been taking an interest into different urban legends that are related to Michigan.
One that I recently heard about seemed interesting so I decided to take a deeper looking into a Michigan Urban Legend Involving sand that sings.
Famous Michigan Urban Legends: The Singing Sands Of Bete Grise
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, on the shores of Lake Superior, lies a beach with a mysterious legend.
The beach at Bete Grise is known for its "singing sands" - if you press your palms into the sand and rub, it emits a haunting, musical sound.
According to the legend, the singing comes from the spirit of a Native American maiden who lost her lover to the depths of Lake Superior.
She spends eternity calling out to him from the shore, and the sand itself seems to carry her mournful song.
Visitors are encouraged to help the maiden by "playing" the sand and adding their voices to her eternal lament.
The legend adds that if you try to take the singing sand home with you, it will lose its magical properties and fall silent.
This is part of what makes Bete Grise beach so special - the singing sand is a unique phenomenon found nowhere else along the shores of Lake Superior.
So if you find yourself in Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, be sure to visit Bete Grise and experience the haunting song of the sands for yourself.
Here is a cool video I found on YouTuber Alexis Dahl's page testing out the urban legend.
