CDC Warns of Deadly Virus Now in Michigan

Many viruses and illnesses have been making their way through Michigan lately, but perhaps none as deadly or preventable as this one.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that a dangerous virus is having a resurgence, and Michigan is one of the states part of the outbreak. That virus is the measles.

CDC Warns of Multiple Measles Cases in 2024

The CDC updates their data on reported measles cases weekly, and as of March 21st, 2024, "a total of 64 measles cases were reported by 17" states. Michigan is on that list. so is Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York City, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington

With 64 cases so far this year, that's already 6 more cases than last year, with three fourths of the year still to go.

This out break of measles across the U.S. is something to take seriously. While some of the symptoms include a high fever, a runny nose, and a cough, there are vastly more dire results; The World Health Organization (WHO) says the "measles is a highly contagious, serious airborne disease caused by a virus that can lead to severe complications and death."

While the measles is very serious, it's also very preventable. Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which actually protects you from measles, mumps, and rubella. Right now, the CDC recommends the first dose of the vaccine between 12 - 15 months old, and the second dose between 4 - 6 years old.
