How 94.9 MMQ Became ‘The First Classic Rock Station in the Nation’
If you've ever cranked up 94.9 MMQ and thought, "This is just better," there's a reason for that — and it all started with one simple idea.
Back in the early 1980s, Fred Jacobs was programming rock radio in Detroit and started noticing something unexpected happening.
Why Rock Radio Audiences Started Dividing
"I started noticing that our audience was beginning to split," Jacobs says. "Younger listeners didn't want the older stuff... and the older audience didn't like the newer music."

Rock stations at the time played everything — new hits, old songs, all mixed together. But that divide sparked a question: what if a station just focused on the best era of rock?
Sounds obvious now. Back then? Not so much.
The Risky Idea No One Wanted
"I really had trouble getting arrested with this format," Jacobs admits. "Everybody says they want to be innovative... but most people just stick with what works."
For a couple of years, nobody bit.
Until a struggling station in Mid-Michigan decided to take a swing.
The East Lansing Meeting That Changed Radio
A meeting at Beggar's Banquet in East Lansing helped seal the deal, and that station — WMMQ — flipped the switch as the first true classic rock station in the nation.
"They were pretty desperate," Jacobs recalls. "They just said, 'Fred, come in, do your thing.'"
And when it launched?
"It had explosive ratings... it really blew everybody in the market away."
Even the name came from listeners.
"The word 'classic' kept coming up," Jacobs says. "That's when we started playing around with it — and 'classic rock' was born."
