A fresh look at crime and safety statistics from small cities all around the country reveals that 5 of the nation's 100 most dangerous ones are right here in Michigan.

If it were evenly spread among the 50 states, each state would have 2 cities in the Top (or should we say Bottom) 100. With five, Michigan's definitely has more than its fair share.

What makes a small city "dangerous"? Let's take a look.

When Is a Small City Considered to Be a Dangerous One?

The personal finance website WalletHub recently published its list of the "Best Small Cities in America (2024)". Their study looked at a broad array of statistics from more than 1,300 small cities around the United States, ranging in population from 25,000 to 100,000 residents.

One of WalletHub's focuses was the safety of each city - things like the rates of violent crime and/or property crime; drug and alcohol-related deaths; and the number of people killed in car crashes, either as drivers, passengers or pedestrians.

The survey found Michigan's safest small city to be Rochester Hills, an affluent suburb of Detroit, which also ranked as the 36th safest small city in the nation. Three more towns in the Metro Detroit area also landed among the 100 safest small cities in the nation, including Novi, Royal Oak and Farmington Hills.

But it wasn't all rosy for the Mitten State.
