Voter turnout can typically be seen in lower numbers on an off-year election, like this year. However, we could see those numbers jump upwards as absentee voting becomes a thing amongst voters.

With that being said, the 2020 November election saw 60% of Michiganders submitting their votes with an absentee ballot. WILX is saying that this next Primary could see that pattern again.

“It definitely is the trend,” Chris Swope, the Lansing City Clerk said. “People have really shifted to the absentee voting, the vote by mail, voting at home, or stopping into our office at a time when it’s not crowded and picking up a ballot in person.”

Out of 11,000 absentee ballots, over 67% have been returned to the City of Lansing. A local Michigan resident said that she is using absentee voting because of the pandemic.

“It’s easy, it’s flexible. You can vote at a time that’s convenient for you,” Carter-Scott told WILX. “What is great even more so is the fact that because of COVID-19, I’m fully vaccinated, but I don’t know who else is fully vaccinated, so it makes you feel safe when you vote.”

Other Lansing residents say that they are opting towards absentee ballots, because they won't have time to make it to the polls on election day.

“I think it will increase the overall turnout because it just does make it more convenient,” Swope said. “You have an absentee ballot application that comes to your home, all you have to do is sign it and mail it back.”

For clarity, 30,000 people are currently on the ballot list here in Lansing for absentee ballots.
