Michigan Voter Registration Deadline & Voting By Mail

Election season is right around the corner.

So many issues.

So many questions.

And I keep seeing and hearing talk of voting by mail. Voter fraud.

So I wanted to do some digging about what all that means to us voting here in Michigan. For me and for you.

First things first.

We have two elections coming.

What's the deadline to register to vote in an election?

Since Proposal 3 passed in 2018, there is no deadline to register to vote in the State of Michigan. Michigan now allows Same Day registration. We always encourage voters to get registered ahead of time. A good place to start the registration process is the Michigan Voter Information Center and can be found at mvic.sos.state.mi.us. (Michigan SOS)

Even though there is no deadline to register to vote, there are deadlines to request an absentee ballot and when to turn those in. More about that here.

There's a lot of talk about voting by mail. How does that work in Michigan?

VOTE BY MAIL – All registered voters have the right to vote by mail. Apply online or download an application.

If you do show up to the polls, you're going to need to be ready to show ID.

When you go to the polls to cast a ballot, you will be asked to produce photo identification. The requirements are the result of a 1996 law determined to be enforceable by the Michigan Supreme Court in 2007. (Michigan.gov)
