Paul McCartney, Paul Rodgers, Alice Cooper, Joan Jett & Billy Joel Make Special New Year’s Eve Appearances
With pretty much everyone wanting to bid farewell to 2016, a handful of classic rockers marked New Year's Eve in style, either with their own concerts or by making special guest appearances. We’ve got video of stars like Paul Rodgers, Joan Jett, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel and Alice Cooper in action.
To start, Billy Joel welcomed in 2017 in the most fitting way possible, by playing “Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway),” a beloved album cut from his 1976 record Turnstiles. He performed it during his show at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., which is located approximately 35 miles from Miami, and it’s embedded above, with the songs that preceded it, “Souvenir” and “Auld Lang Syne,” embedded below.
Cooper and his manager, Shep Gordon, threw their annual New Year’s Eve fundraiser in Maui, Hawaii to benefit the Maui Food Bank. They were joined by Steven Tyler, the Doobie Brothers, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Dave Mason, Bob Seger saxophonist Alto Reed and actor Jim Carrey, who wore Cooperesque eye makeup. According to the Maui News, the concerts, which have been held since 2008, have raised enough money to pay for almost 1 million meals served.
On the Caribbean island of St. Barts, Paul McCartney joined the Killers to sing the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter.” The occasion was a private New Year’s Eve party thrown by Russian billionaire and owner of Chelsea Football Club Roman Abramovich.
Finally, there are apparently at least two touring versions of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, the symphonic metal outfit that grew out of Savatage in the mid-‘90s and had great success with their Christmas records. On New Year’s Eve, they performed at both the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland and the Key Arena in Seattle. At the former, Joan Jett performed "Crimson and Clover" and "I Love Rock and Roll," while Rodgers delivered hits from both Bad Company and Free, "Can't Get Enough" and "All Right Now."
