The new option has been around since 2021 but some people are just now becoming aware of it.

If you recently moved to Michigan, you may be wondering how long you have before you need to get a Michigan driver's license. Well, that answer depends on a few factors.

Unlike most states who refer to it as the DMV, in Michigan the department that handles the registering of vehicles is called the Secretary of State. Why?

Hint: the best way to avoid doing it is to obey Michigan traffic laws. Otherwise, you get a lovely letter from our friends at the capital building in Lansing.

Take this as just an opinion, but who wouldn't appreciate shorter waits, less crying kids (and let's be real, adults) and less stress at the Secretary of State?

If you already have it in preparation for the original 2021 deadline, great! Otherwise, don't stress. You have plenty of time...about two years, actually.

If your license has expired, don't stress, you'll be fine.

Most services are online, late fees are waived, and they are prepping for more Michiganders to Vote By Mail.
