You have to wear a face mask.

But outside? Downtown East Lansing?

Folks are already not feeling this one.

Let's start at the beginning.

We might want to go all the way back to when East Lansing became the unwilling poster child of "we don't care about face masks and social distancing" when Harper's re-opened and cases spread from there. That was back in June.

The number of cases of Covid-19 in connection with Harper's Brewpub in East Lansing continues to climb and reach all across Michigan.

Fast forward to August 10th when a new ordinance went into effect for Downtown East Lansing.

East Lansing Mayor Aaron Stephens declared a City State of Emergency and issued a new order requiring that masks be worn in all outdoor public spaces within the boundaries of the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority (DDA), effective Monday, Aug. 10. (City Of East Lansing)

It comes with a handy dandy $25 ticket for every infraction. And why?

“This order has been issued in anticipation of the increased foot traffic that is expected in downtown East Lansing with the return of MSU students this month,” said East Lansing Mayor Aaron Stephens. (City Of East Lansing)

We might be jumping the gun on that increased foot traffic as we found out that MSU is encouraging folks to stay home this fall semester.

...we are asking undergraduate students who planned to live in our residence halls this fall to stay home and continue their education with MSU remotely. (Office of the President/MSU)

We did a short social media poll on Facebook. Here's what some of you had to say:

I think this is going too far. I'm all for the masks indoors when they're needed, but it's hard to breath (I have asthma) and outside is the only freedom we have from the mask. This in my opinion, is being too controlled. We have a right to go for a walk without a mask.

Outside is bizarre. Do you know how hard it is to spread a sickness outside in the open air?

I don’t think u should wear a mask outside unless your too close to someone but even then your suppose to stay 6 feet away so.

Just another reason NOT to go to EL!

I think it makes sense because college students congregate downtown and rarely social distance

Just wear the mask people. It's not that big of a deal. Wtaf
