SInce I grew up here in the Greater Lansing area, I can tell you that Walter French Jr. High School was at one time, one of the more popular schools in this area.

I even remember getting my first radio job back in the mid '70s and so many kids would call me on the request lines asking to hear their favorite songs.

Many of those kids were students at the old Walter French Jr. High School in Lansing at the corner of Mount Hope and Cedar Street.

As you know, many years have passed and Walter French has been sitting vacant for quite some time now.

Things may change very soon for the old school.

According to the Lansing State Journal:

Last month, the Michigan State Housing Development Authority granted $1.5 million in low-income housing tax credits to the Capital Area Housing Partnership and 1900 Cedar Development, LLC to redevelop the former school into low-income housing.

Well at least we know that the former Walter French Jr. High School won't be sitting vacant for that much longer.

Nothing is happening quite yet because current negotiations are being discussed and everything needs to be laid out on the table to more forward.

Here's what's been talked about so far, courtesy of the Lansing State Journal:

The completed project will have 76 units including one-,two-and three-bedroom apartments. Rent prices will be income-based and are expected to cost between $750 and $1,100 per month.

How cool is this. One day, perhaps someone you know will be renting out space at the old Walter French Jr. High School.
