Driving thru any abandoned or deserted neighborhood is risky...even in daylight.  You take a chance of getting a flat tire from all the debris in the streets, your presence is unwanted by those still there, and many of these neighborhoods have become places for drug dealing.

Flint is the largest city in Genesee County, and any long-time Michigander knows of Flint's woes since the middle of the 20th Century. The city's genesis goes back to 1819 when it was founded by Jacob Smith. It became a leader in the lumber trade, and then in the late 1800s into the 1900s, Flint led the way in manufacturing carriages, buggies, and automobiles.

When General Motors was founded in Flint in 1908, Buick and Chevrolet vehicles were massively cranked out...so much so, they acquired the nickname "Vehicle City", of which street signs still stand to this day .

Beginning in the 1960s, Flint's problems began. GM downsized and over the years, ended up letting go almost ninety per cent of its employees. By 2010, half of the town's population had left. Neighborhoods were left empty, crime rose, and Flint became known as one of the most dangerous cities in the United States.

Contaminated water in the 2010s didn't help matters. Lead was found in the local water supply which may or may not have led to the outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease. Fortunately, the water problem is seemingly taken care of with a new source and new copper piping. Read more about Flint's water crisis here.

The gallery below takes you thru a few of Flint's deserted neighborhoods, some with glimmers of life here & there, as a reminder of what Flint residents have endured for more than sixty years.
