The cover song. Some people have shot to stardom by covering a classic, reinventing, restructuring and repackaging the song. Timing is usually everything but there are rules to follow.

Sometimes you NAIL it with a cover song. Disturbed with "The Sound of Silence" is one of the most talked about cover songs of my lifetime. It was a classic and shouldn't have been attempted but they totally pulled it off with almost a half a BILLION views on youtube.com

Disturbed got lucky because the rule is "NEVER cover a Classic". Most of the time you can't do the song justice. Stick with the B sides. Heart did a bad ass version of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll". I think it works because Ann is a female and hearing a woman rip it to shreds offers a new perspective.

You shouldn't cover "Stairway to Heaven!"

All the covers of "Stairway to Heaven". One of the worst is Far Corporation's cover from 1985. It gets a little uncomfortable. This is my #1 worst cover of all time.

There is a 9 minute version of it but I'll spare you a few minutes.

You also shouldn't cover the Beatles... Unless you are Joe Cocker. He did a CLASSIC version of "With a Little Help From My Friends."
