Looks like May might be the better time to find morel mushrooms in Michigan, though I have heard stories of some early finds already this year.

The picture above is from morels My Honey found in South Lansing two years ago; the burger next to it is from the elk the WMMQ Midday Host Duran Martinez harvested in Gaylord.

Also, My Honey soaked the mushrooms before he cooked them, then threw the water out in the yard, hoping that some of the spores might generate more delicious fungus!

The MI DNR has guidelines here on how to properly identify mushrooms, as well as suggested places to search for them.

There's also some debate in the state about the requirements for selling harvested  mushrooms to restaurants and public vendors, which last year were going for up to $60 a pound in some places. Find more details on that here.
