For over 20 years, I have ended my day at work by saying "Get out into the woods and on the water, take the kids hunting and fishing. They are the future of our outdoor sports."

Both of my parents instilled their love of the outdoors in me from a very early age. The tradition continues with my daughter Eryn and wife Sara Marie. Understanding that it's not for everyone, there are still many that would love the opportunity but will never ask to be taken. That's why it is up to those who do enjoy hunting and fishing, to educate future generations.

So much comes from just learning about it, that it never even requires harvesting an animal.  Sportsmanship, patience and ethics are some of the basic principles that mold young people into adults. Not to mention, firearms safety training and education can help reduce the risks of accidents caused by curiosity.

To help end the winter doldrums and get the kids outside, the 9th Annual Rabbit and Squirrel Derby is taking place in Laingsburg on January 14th. Sign up will be Friday January 13th at the Laingsburg American Legion Main Hall from 6 - 9 PM. Late sign up will be Saturday morning from 7 - 9 AM at the same location. Cost is $20 per adult and $10 for kids (15 and under). Raffles, food and fun, will follow the hunt.
