Secret Underground Tunnel System at Mt. Hope and Farm Lane in Lansing?

Every time I drive by this series of what look like covers to underground tunnels or storage facilities at Mt. Hope and Farm Lanes in East Lansing (is that technically East Lansing...Lansing...Meridian Township?), I wonder about their purpose. Tempted to stop by and just take a look, probably trespassing isn't advised.

Who knows what these are at the Michigan State University Hancock Turfgrass Research Center?
