The Jackson City Council member who was charged last month with "assault with intent to do bodily harm or assault by strangulation" stepped down from his seat this week.

Andrew Frounfelker is accused of assaulting his girlfriend. He's alleged to have beaten her so brutally that she required surgery where metal plates were put in her face. There was a good deal of public outcry when the alleged attack was first reported.

Jackson Mayor Derek Dobies announced yesterday in a press conference that he'd received a resignation letter from Frounfelker. The letter spoke to 'recent city progress'; he also reportedly claimed innocence regarding the recent criminal charges against him, which MLive.com has more details about here.
