Nowadays, Jimmy Raye is a senior adviser to NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent.

But 50 years ago, he was on his way to leading Michigan State to an undefeated season.

Raye was the starting quarterback for the Spartans back then, including the legendary 1966 MSU vs. Notre Dame "Game Of The Century." He joined "Staudt On Sports" on Wednesday to recount his memories of that game as the Spartans head to South Bend this weekend for the 50th anniversary.

Raye talked about the game, Ara Parseghian's decision to play for the tie, Michigan State being a trailblazer in terms of having African American players and much more. He said he wasn't bitter about the game ending in a tie, but he admitted he was let down by the final outcome.

"I was disappointed because our goal was to have an undefeated season, to go 10-0," Raye said. "We were up 10 to nothing and kind of let it slip away from us.

"But in hindsight it's probably the best thing that ever happened because the game has lived on in the memories of people for 50 years. And still today even in my professional coaching career I get questions about the Michigan State-Notre Dame game and all the great players that were in that game."

Raye said the game has a prominent place in college football's history book due to its pioneering qualities, and not just in terms of racial diversity among players.

"There were a lot of firsts in that game and a lot of things that will stand the test of time, because now there could never be another tie game because they play the overtime," he said.

"...It will always remain one of the most infamous games in the history of college football, particularly because the diversity of the Michigan State roster and the Notre Dame roster, as well as the fact that neither team went to a bowl game and the rest of the country never got to see those great players on display in a postseason game because of the rules of that time and the game ended in a tie."
