Dog Food Recall - 70 Dogs Have Died, Check Your Pantry

Recalls are never good. When it has something to do with your fur babies, you get EXTRA nervous. A chew toy is one thing but their food is a whole new level of panic. Chances are you've been feeding them the recalled product already and the damage may be done.

The company is called Midwestern Pet Foods and they are out of Evansville, Indiana. The initial voluntary recall happened right at year's end on December 30th and has been expanded as now more than 70 dogs have died after consuming the food.

It is important to note this recall DOES NOT AFFECT all of Midwestern Pet Foods products.

Also, this brand is sold locally in Lansing and Mid-Michigan (Soldan's & Tractor Supply Company) so it is important to check the names and lot numbers on the recall list against the products you might have in your house for the safety of your pet.

The recalled products may contain aflatoxin levels which exceed acceptable limits. Products were distributed nationally to online distributors and retail stores nationwide.

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by the mold Aspergillus flavus, which can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause illness and death in pets. (FDA)

Obviously don't feed it to your animal. You'll want to get rid of this stuff and you're being encouraged to destroy it in a way that no other animals can come into contact with it or consume it.

If your pet has consumed it, contact your vet IMMEDIATELY.
