Foreigners members are British and American, and they formed the band in 1976. The band members are veteran British guitarist and songwriter Mick Jones, fellow Briton ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald, Dennis Elliot, and American vocalist Lou Gramm, Al Greenwood and Ed Gagliardi. Mick came up with the name since some members are British and some are American.

The first self titled album was released in 1977 and was played on radio extensively. Their first four albums released by Foreigner were certified 5X platinum in the United States. The first album hit #4 on the U.S. album chart. They followed up their debut with Double Vision did even better peaking at #3. The third album was Head Games coming out in 1979 which peaked on the album charts at #5. Then came Foreigner 4,  the band was reduced to a quartet, as Jones and Gramm took over running the group. The first three albums did very well for this band, and Foreigner 4 hit #1 on the album charts for 10 weeks in 1981.

Their first greatest hits album “Records'' came out in 1982 and sold 7 million copies in the U.S. In 1984 they released Agent Provocateur to great success around the world. The band then took a break for a while, their next project was “Inside Information'' only hitting the top ten in a few European countries and peaked at #15 in the U.S.

As Foreigner continued at this point there were major personnel changes due to the more prevalent use of synthesizers, Lou Gramm lead singer left the band. They would go on to release albums without Lou Gramm which performed poorly in sales, Lou even came back for one more album Mr. Moonlight which did not do well.

Foreigner was a group that came out around the same time as other great bands like Boston and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. They held their own as one of the world's best selling bands of all time. Foreigner has sold more than 80 million albums, which includes 37.5 million in America. Their leader Mick Jones has been for a long time the only founding member still with the band.
